ABOUT
THE DECK COMPANY

Family-owned & operated, our team delivers over 100-years of combined deck building and construction experience to your project.
In 1992, Tony F. Shafer founded The Deck Company. In the early years, we were building only a few decks a year. But within a few years, the company grew to add several crew members and was completing a dozen decks a year. As the company grew, Tony’s wife, Shari, came on board to help manage the administrative and organizational aspects of the company.

A Family Focused on Custom Decks

Years later, their daughter, April, joined the team to use her experience in design as well as project coordination. Her involvement helped enhance the look and as well as the process of the projects they built. Shortly thereafter, her husband, Rob Schmidt, became part of the operation. Rob brings significant construction experience to the company. For example, Rob possesses Commercial B and Residential B contracting certifications. For this reason, the company can to serve residential and commercial customers alike. Then, a few years ago, Rob Hatton, Rob Schmidt’s brother came on board to assist with marketing and operations.

The Future of The Deck Company

Today, “Bear” and “Tree Frog”, the third generation of The Deck Company builders can be seen at job sites. Accordingly, they’re looking forward to serving our next generation of clients. Committed to the same commitment to quality, hard work, and excellence.

In 2019, our fearless leader, Tony, suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Rob Schmidt stepped up and took the lead, leveraging his decades of construction experience. Under his leadership, The Deck Company has continued to grow from building a handful of residential projects annually, to consistently building numerous custom deck projects each year. Working with homeowners, HOA’s, property management companies, commercial spaces, and businesses across the Greater Denver area. Check out more of our deck construction work here.

COMPLETION & WALKTHROUGH

Your project is only complete once you are 100% satisfied with the outcome. Our team works with you to ensure the final result mirrors your vision, and that each of the final details meets or exceeds your expectations.

Sustainability in Deck Construction

As a family-owned and operated company, we recognize the importance of sustainability. One of the ways we help give back is through our partnership with One Tree Planted. For every deck we build, we plant 100 trees to help ensure future generations will have the resource to enjoy our forests. Another way we ensure sustainability is through composite materials. For example, the average 500 square foot deck built with Trex composite materials contains 14,000 recycled plastic bags.

OUR TEAM

In an industry with a reputation of instability and rapid change, The Deck Company is proud to have crews that have been part of our family for years.

Why is longevity important?

Many deck builders suffer high turnover in their crews. This results in poor quality work, delayed construction timeframes, or even errors. We are proud that our teams have worked together for years. This means the team on your project has a high quality of communication, as well as a mutual understanding of how to work well together. This means projects get completed on time. As a result, you have the confidence that inspection processes will be fast and done right the first time.

Clients have told us a deciding factor in choosing The Deck Company was finding out how long our crews have been with us.

TONY SHAFER
TONY SHAFERFounder - In Memory Of
Owning and operating The Deck Company was Tony’s true passion. The idea to start a deck and patio business was inspired by the memory of a patio company his father owned and operated during summer vacation from his teaching career in the Denver Public Schools. Over the years, Tony grew the business from advertising on telephone poles and building several projects himself, to multiple building crews and a booming year-round production all across the Denver area. The Deck Company even grew to include commercial projects and completed several deck and shade structures for The Denver Zoo. Tony’s dream of being an entrepreneur continues on as The Deck Company is still family-owned and operated. His memory will always live on in every deck we build…big or small.
ROBERT SCHMIDTOwner, President, Jack-of-all-trades
At the age of 14, Rob started working on summer break for his grandpa’s local heating and air conditioning company, Star Heating. He learned all about what it takes to run a business while cleaning the workshop and making fittings for job installs as well as being an apprentice under the leadership of his uncles. Fast forward five years, and he was the youngest HVAC technician (at the time) to receive his HVAC Journeyman’s license. Being a part of a family business taught him life skills that he incorporates every day into running The Deck Company. Working hard, keeping your word, always doing your best, and taking pride in your craft were values that were instilled into him early on. Today, Rob holds General Contractor’s licenses in both Residential and Commercial construction in conjunction with an H and VB Mechanical Supervisor’s license. He knows all the ins and outs of every aspect of construction, and he has built everything from a small staircase for our Decks for Vets program to a million-dollar luxury home from the ground up.
APRIL SCHMIDTCo - Owner, Operations Manager
When April’s dad, Tony, started the family business she was just graduating from high school, so business ownership is in her blood. Right after obtaining her Interior Design degree in 2005, she started working alongside her husband, Rob, building high-end houses and remodeling historic bungalows in the Denver area. After years of learning all aspects of the construction trade firsthand, she decided to use her knowledge and experience to further grow the family business. As the operations manager, she oversees everything from schedule coordination to material availability and ordering to job site visits and customer relations.
SHARON SHAFERCo - Fonder, Office Manager
When Tony founded The Deck Company in 1992, Sharon was his biggest cheerleader and support system. Coming from an entrepreneurial family herself, she was used to working side by side with family members at the local Wheat Ridge bar, The Marigold. She also brings extensive office management expertise to the table and is responsible for initial contact with current and potential clients. In addition to managing the office, she also helps coordinate appointments and team schedules. She is the friendly voice you will first hear as you reach out to The Deck Company for your initial estimate appointment.
THE DECK COMPANY FAMILY
We are deeply proud of the relationships we’ve built with our team members – some of whom have been a part of the company for a decade. Their skills, dedication, and customer focus play a huge role in the success The Deck Company has enjoyed over the last three decades.
ROB HATTONMarketing & Sales
Rob started working in his family’s business at the age of 14 answering phones, helping keep the warehouse clean and organized, and even going on sales calls at companies like Sears, Toys R Us, and Hasbro. From that early age, he recognized the importance of connecting with the right clients – clients who share the same values as the company. He believes in accountability, authenticity, innovation, and reputation. And is committed to helping ensure those cornerstones are the foundation of every relationship the Deck Company builds with clients. A large portion of Rob’s time is spent building truly epic spreadsheets, but he most enjoys his time spent meeting with future clients, working with them through the discovery process, and helping their vision of the perfect outdoor space come to life. Rob was born and raised in Denver. He’s a husband and father of three boys. His two youngest sons, Bear and the “Treefrog” are already involved in The Deck Company learning about building strong customer relationships and ensuring a quality product is delivered every time.
